DIY Epoxy Hair Comb
By: Sarah Spooner
Hi and welcome back to another craft series blog. In this week's blog we will be talking about how to make your hair comb from epoxy, what will be needed, and some helpful tips. This is a fun little project to do with the kids and useful too! The possibilities here are endless, so let's get started!!
First let's talk about what you will need to make this DIY Epoxy Hair Comb. You will need: a silicone mold of your choice. Ekopel 2K or another epoxy of your choice. stir stick, gloves, paper or plastic furniture covering, popsicle stick, any additives or tints you would like to add into the epoxy for a fun look. And a heat gun or hair dryer to pop any bubbles. You can find stir sticks, gloves, popsicle sticks, and paper or plastic furniture coverings, at your local hardware store or even Walmart. You can find a lot of silicone molds at your local craft store, Amazon, or online. Always remember to take proper precautions when working with epoxy. Ekopel 2K is odorless, and non toxic so there is no need for ventilation. Other epoxies might not be odorless and non toxic so you will want to make sure you take the proper precautions that your epoxy requires to keep you safe.
Now let's talk about setting up. You will want to make sure you set everything up in a nice flow. If everything is set up then you won't have any room for mistakes. You will want to do this project on a clean flat surface. If the surface is uneven the project can dry uneven as well. If there is dust or wind from a fan then the project can end up with dust and debris. Then you will want to lay out your paper or plastic furniture covering. This will make the clean up a lot easier on yourself. At the end you can just grab the plastic, pick it up and throw it away. Next lay out all the pieces on the table. Silicon mold, tints or additives right beside it. Both parts of epoxy with a stir stick next to it and a pile of gloves to use. Now you sound ready to get creative!!
Lastly, let's talk about how to do this. You will want to mix your epoxy together as the directions state. Remember working with epoxies is like a science, if one thing is off the whole thing can be off. So you will want to make sure you follow your directions to whatever epoxy you have to a T. You can pre add additives like glitter, sea shells, sand, tints etc. You can wait until you start pouring, or layer it even. Can also swirl tints in or just leave it blank, up to you really! Next pour the epoxy into the silicon mold. Then add any additives or tints you want. You can use a popsicle stick to make a marble or swirl effect, or move pieces where you want them in the mold. Options are unlimited with how you can design these, some cool designs that might be fun to do with the kids are: princess combs, glitter combs, beach comb, etc. Really have fun with this and make it YOU!! Once you're done let it sit and dry for 24-36 hours or however long your epoxy states to let it dry and harden. Then pop it out and brush your hair!!
