How To Make A DIY Mirror Frame

How To Make A DIY Mirror Frame

By: Xolelwa Gwarube

Welcome back to our DIY blog series!! Another week of establishing the diversity of Ekopel 2K. There is so much you can achieve with Ekopel 2K! In this week's blog we will be making a mirror frame using ekopel! We will go over what you need, the steps to take, and any tips! Lets jump right in!

First let's start with what you will need. You will need a silicone mold, a mirror piece suitable for your mold. You wouldn’t want the mirror piece to be bigger than the mold. You will also need epoxy glue. All the things listed above you can get at your local craft store or online. You will also need Ekopel 2K or another craft epoxy of your choice and maybe a snack to keep you accompanied.

Next you will want to set up your area. I would recommend taking something like old newspapers, or trash bags, and laying them down on your work space. This will allow for any easy clean up when you're done. Make sure the area is clean and dust free. Would hate to have an unwanted piece in your finish. You will also want to ensure your work area is level or the project will dry uneven and unlevel as well. Next get any stir sticks, or fun additives you want ready. (fun additives you could use are glitter, seashells, confetti, etc. possibilities are endless when it comes to additives.) Can use gloves if desired. This step you just want to lay everything out, so when you go to work you will have everything you need. This will allow a good workflow!

Third is mixing which is an important step! If you have ekopel you will want to mix it for 10 minutes, rest for 5 minutes, and then mix for another 2-3 minutes. From here you will want to pour immediately and get to work. If you don’t immediately pour the ekopel and let it sit in its container the ekopel will get very hot and can start to harden in the container. So make sure to waste no time here. If you have another craft epoxy you will need to read their specific directions and specifications. As Ekopel does not need a ventilation system others may need a mask or ventilation system.

Next you will pour your material into the mold. You can add any additives you want at this point. You can go over the project with a heat gun or hair dryer when done. This will pop any bubbles. You can leave the bubbles as you may want them for character; it's up to you. From here leave it to dry for 48 hours or whatever your epoxy directions state.

Lastly when the material is completely dry, carefully remove the material from the mold. From here you can lay it flat down. Apply glue to the areas you want the mirror to adhere to the frame you’ve made. Using medium pressure lay the mirror down on the glued areas. Allow for it to dry and ooh-la-la you have a beautiful unique mirror frame!!
