The costs of refinishing your shower and bathtub can be overwhelming. When improving the look of your home, hiring a professional can take a lot out of your pocket. But, DIY home kits are now increasingly available! Refinished Bath Solutions has a straightforward bath and shower refinishing kit that is non-toxic and pet safe.
Our Exopel 2K is the original pour-on bath refinishing kit developed to fix fume and peeling problems with outdated sprays. But, before you can take on the task of a home makeover, you need to prepare! Here are the necessary steps Refinished Bath Solutions recommends you take before you begin.
Vacuum & Dust
Dusting and vacuuming the walls, ceiling, and shelves inside the bathroom is necessary to prevent particles from getting into the coating.
Remove Personal Items
It’s best to remove all of your items from the bathroom before you start. This would include things such as towels, bathrobes, personal care products, or any other products in the bathtub or shower.
Remove Silicone
Remove silicone on the edges of the shower or bathtub before using the kit. Exopel may peel off it is applied to a surface where the silicone has not been removed.
Soap Scum & Limescale
Remove any soap scum or limescale. Refinished Bath Solutions recommends scrubbing the target areas with Lysol Power Toilet cleaner. If there are spots that won’t come off, they can be cleaned with sandpaper.
Rust
The easiest way to remove any rust stains is with sandpaper. After sanding, wash the area well before applying the refinishing kit.
Old Bathtub Paint
If the bathtub or shower has peeling paint, it should be removed. The coating needs a strong base for adhesion, and peeling paint can cause issues. You can use heavy grit sandpaper to smooth out any chips or edges of paint. If that’s not possible, we recommend a paint stripper to remove it entirely.
Chips, Grooves, or Cracks.
Fill in any visible damage to the bathtub and shower with Epoxy or Bondo filler to guarantee strong adhesion. After filling in these areas, sand them, so they are even and smooth.
