The Most Common Prep Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

If there’s one thing that makes the biggest difference in how your refinishing project turns out, it’s prep. A smooth, clean, properly prepped surface is the foundation of a perfect finish; and skipping just one small step can lead to streaking, peeling, fisheyes, or adhesion issues.

After helping thousands of customers, we’ve pretty much seen every prep mistake in the book. The good news? Most of them are easy to avoid once you know what to look for. Here are the most common ones and how to prevent them.

1. Not Removing Soap Scum Completely

This is by far the #1 issue. Soap scum sounds harmless, but it creates an invisible barrier that nothing sticks to; not paint, not coatings, not sealers. Even if it “looks clean,” it might still be there.

How to avoid it:
Use a strong cleaner (like Soft Scrub) and scrub the entire surface thoroughly. Rinse, dry, and run your hand across the surface; if it feels even a little slick, keep going. Make sure to get the front apron as well! This area is commonly overlooked.

2. Skipping Sanding or Not Sanding Enough

Sanding isn’t about removing the old finish, it's about creating a surface so the coating can grip. Skipping this step or doing it lightly can lead to peeling later.

How to avoid it:
Use 100-220 grit sandpaper, an orbital sander would be great. The surface should feel smooth but matte, not glossy.

3. Leaving Dust or Debris Behind

Even tiny dust particles can create rough spots or cause the coating to separate in small areas.

How to avoid it:
Vacuum thoroughly and wipe with isopropyl alcohol after sanding. Make sure the surface is completely dry before you begin.

4. Not Removing Silicone Fully

Silicone is another thing Ekopel will not stick to, and it’s sneaky. Even old residue or polishing left behind can cause fisheyes or patchy spots.

How to avoid it:
Use a razor, silicone remover, and patience. If water beads up on the area, silicone is still there, keep removing until water sits flat.

5. Rushing Through Prep to “Get to the Fun Part”

We get it, the coating step is exciting. But rushing prep often leads to mistakes that cost time and product in the long run.

How to avoid it:
Slow and steady. Block out enough time so you’re not tempted to cut corners. Prep is 80% of the job.

6. Not Checking the Surface After Each Step

Sometimes everything seems done… until the coating goes on and you suddenly notice scratches, low spots, dust, or areas you missed.

How to avoid it:
Do a final hands-on check in good lighting. Run your hand across every inch. If it feels uneven, dull in one spot, or rough, fix it now; not later.

7. Cleaning With the Wrong Products

Some cleaners leave behind films or conditioners that prevent adhesion, even if they “seem” strong enough.

How to avoid it:
Stick with known safe options: All Purpose Soft Scrub, or Lysol Power Cleaner. Avoid anything oily or moisture-sealing.

Good Prep = Great Results

Most refinishing issues start long before the coating even comes out of the container. By taking your time, checking your surface, and avoiding these common mistakes, you’re setting yourself up for the smoothest, strongest finish possible.

Whether it’s a tub, tile surround, RV shower, or something totally unexpected, proper prep is the secret to a flawless result every time.
