When you're tackling a DIY refinishing project, we know questions can pop up every step of the way. From whether to use the roll-on or pour-on kits to understanding the difference between cleaning products, we’re here to clear up the confusion. Below are answers to some of the most common questions we hear from our customers, straight from the customer support team.
1. What’s the difference between the roll-on and pour-on kits?
This is one of the most common questions we get, and for good reason! Both the Roll-On and Pour-On kits are designed for refinishing, but they each have unique applications.
-
Roll-On Kit: The Roll-On Kit is perfect for vertical surfaces like shower walls, tiles, and tubs. The process is similar to painting, simply roll on two coats of the material. This method gives you more control during the application process, making it ideal for DIYers, especially if you're new to refinishing. The result is a bright white, glossy finish, that adds a fresh, modern feel to your home.
-
Pour-On Kit: The Pour-On Kit, on the other hand, is best suited for tubs, sinks, and larger basins. This self-leveling material is poured directly over the surface, where it naturally settles into a smooth, even coat. The kit comes with a roller to help guide and spread the material. This method is a great choice for anyone looking to get a uniform, high-gloss finish.
Which one should you choose?
If you're working with a vertical surface or need more control, the Roll-On Kit is your best bet.
If you're confident in your skills and working with a tub or sink, the Pour-On Kit will help you achieve a professional-level finish.
2. Should I use Lysol Toilet Bowl Cleaner or Soft Scrub for surface preparation?
In our earlier videos, we recommended Lysol Toilet Bowl Cleaner for prepping tubs and sinks. However, we’ve since updated our instructions to suggest Soft Scrub instead.
The reason for this change is that Soft Scrub is more effective at breaking down soap scum and residue. This cleaner ensures the surface is properly prepared for refinishing while maintaining the integrity of the material.
While Lysol can still get the job done, we now recommend Soft Scrub for the best results. After scrubbing, rinse the surface thoroughly and wipe it down with isopropyl alcohol before applying the coating to ensure a clean, residue-free surface.
3. How do I address imperfections in the finish?
Whether you’re in between coats with the Roll-On Kit or dealing with imperfections after the final application, the process to fix them is the same.
Sometimes, despite your best efforts, you may notice imperfections in the finish after applying the coating. Whether it's fisheyes, streaks, bumps, or texture issues, don’t worry! These can typically be fixed with a little extra care.
If you notice imperfections in the finish, the first step is to sand the affected area. Use a fine-grit sandpaper (around 220-320 grit) to smooth out any imperfections. It’s important to sand lightly, as you don’t want to remove too much of the coating. The goal is to smooth the surface and ensure its level.
Once sanded, wipe down the area with a damp cloth to remove any dust or debris, and then use isopropyl alcohol to ensure the surface is clean and ready for recoating.
For those who don’t have more material on hand, we offer touch-up kits. These are designed to blend seamlessly with your existing finish and are a quick solution for fixing small imperfections.
Taking the time to address imperfections will ensure your refinished surface is smooth and flawless!
4. Do I need to warm up the room before starting the application?
This is a good question! For both the Roll-On and Pour-On kits, we recommend keeping the room temperature around 75°F (24°C). This ensures that the coating flows and bonds properly, creating a smooth finish. If your room is too cold, the coating may not cure correctly, and if it’s too hot, you might run into issues like streaking or orange peel.
Here’s what you should do:
Set the room temperature to 75°F 24 hours before application for optimal results.
If the room is too humid, turn down the heat or open a window to help cool things down. Just make sure there’s adequate ventilation while working.
